FIRST TOWNSHIP SETTLERS

At the first meeting of the county commissioners, in May 5, 1834, all the present County of Huntington was erected into a township “to be known and designated as Huntington Township”. But as the population grew it was split into 12 townships.

Dallas - Artemus D. Woodworth with a family of five settled in 1828 in section 14. Capt. Elias Murray settled close by within the year.

Huntington - Joel and Champion Helvey came in 1831 and settled on the present plat of the city of Huntington.

Rock Creek - Albert Draper, a single man came in 1832 from Vermont and settled at the Indian Mills.

Salamonie - Samuel Jones and family of eight came in 1833 and located on the present site of the town of Warren. They came from Highland County Ohio.

Clear Creek - Michael Doyle came with a family of five in 1834 and settled in section 33. His nationality was Irish.

Lancaster - Joseph Sprowl with a family of ten persons traveled from Preble County, Ohio and settled on section 34. May, 1834.

Jefferson - George W. Helms and family of four arrived in 1834 from Preble County, Ohio and located in section 12.

Warren - George Zeller came from Wayne County, Ohio with a family of eight in 1835. He settled in section 11. His nationality was German.

Union - John McEwen with a family of three settled in section 32. Spring, 1835.

Wayne - John Ruggles with a family of six persons and John Buzzard with a family of nine persons came in 1835. They came from Ohio together. Ruggles settled in section 13 and Buzzard in section 12. Wesley Buzzard was first white child born in Wayne Township 1835.

Polk - Jacob Fisher with a family of nine persons came from Clinton County, Ohio and settled on section 24. Mr. Fisher was a native of North Carolina. September, 1836.

Jackson - Jared Darrow, came with a family of four from Rochester, New York in the year 1837. Settled one mile south of Roanoke.
